What projects and training will we fund?

The THRJC welcomes applications for funding for aligned research and community projects and professional training. Consider the THRJC primary aim and goals applying. 

Aim: To catalyze equity-oriented studies at the interface of health and justice using strength-based research approaches for decolonizing, anti-stigmatizing, and culturally safe engagement, policy development, and community advocacy for and with people impacted by the criminal justice system. 

Goals: (1) Accelerate health and social equity-oriented research evidence with and for people who are currently or formerly incarcerated (2) Mobilize evidence from THRJC aligned studies for public events, community advocacy and policy action using innovative and critical methodologies and Peer and Elder-led knowledge exchange; and (3) Amplify inclusive leadership, EDI and commitment to public engagement, transformative systems, and policy action for strengthening the health and social wellbeing of people who are currently or formerly incarcerated. 

What are the funding types and amounts?

  • up to $5000: Research or project grants 
  • up to $500: Mini-grants for to assist with conference or event travel, publication costs, community gatherings, or partnership development meetings 

Who can apply?

Anyone affiliated with the THRJC such as academics, researchers, peer expert advisors, Elders, community partners, students at any level of their education and any educational institution.

What is required for the application?

  • 2-page free-form application that includes
    • Application details: Name, contact information, affiliation
    • 1-page proposal that outlines how the funding will be used
    • Brief budget outlining requested funds and justification for costs
  • Submit 2-page PDF to THRJC Coordinator: samantha.young@ubc.ca

How will the application be evaluated?

  • Alignment with cluster aim and goals
  • Feasible, clear, coherent and detailed plan for use of funds
  • Appropriate budget justification

Awardee Expectations: Contributions to the THRJC

  • Submit 1 page report to outline project/educational outcomes and spending of funds
  • Share research, learning, or project findings during a THRJC knowledge sharing event
  • Write short summary of the funded work for the THRJC newsletters and/or website
